Hawaii Medical Marijuana News

Hawaii Tribune Herald, 14 Feb 2012 - Marijuana is in the news. Now the focus is too many people have medical marijuana permits (Tribune-Herald, Feb. 11). Too many are too young. Too many do not have the correct diagnoses. Is this a threat to the community? Is this really where our focus should be? Is this where our resources should be spent? Methamphetamine has a severe impact on our community. It's made in illegal labs with chemicals that are not meant for human consumption. This substance is tied directly to violent crimes.

The Maui News, 08 Feb 2012 - In my Aug. 6 letter, "Hawaii medical marijuana law confuses, contradicts," I asked if anyone could answer the decade-old question: Is there any legal procedure to acquire medical marijuana in Hawaii? Six months later, I still have not discovered the answer.

Honolulu Star-Advertiser, 04 Jan 2012 - The Hawaii branch of Americans for Safe Access, an advocacy organization for medical cannabis patients, and drug policy reformists respectfully request that President Barack Obama make the following New Year's resolutions: Use his executive powers to move cannabis to a Schedule 2 drug so that doctors can prescribe it. It is beneficial for numerous conditions and diseases. Compassion and logic prompt this order.

Hawaii Tribune Herald, 28 Dec 2011 - It is truly criminal that unscrupulous drug gangs cultivate marijuana in national forests with complete disregard for the environment ("Forests vs. marijuana," Tribune-Herald, Dec. 27). This is solely because the high price of illegal cannabis makes this activity worth the risk. And so, the U.S. Forest Service will continue with eradication and cleanup efforts and will begin advocating for re-legalizing cannabis as a disincentive to grow pot on public lands. BINGO! Now why hasn't that brilliant idea been forwarded sooner?

Honolulu Star-Advertiser, 05 Dec 2011 - It is disheartening to keep reading the old libertarian rationale for legalizing drugs ("Drug war a failure, world leaders agree," Star-Advertiser, Letters, Dec. 1). Legalization proponents do not care about the millions of families destroyed by drug use. Street drugs lead to psychosis, often reducing users to total dependency. It's been estimated that about 25 percent of drug users lose interest in accomplishment and cannot hold jobs or don't want to and some turn to crime. Many stop supporting their children. The brains of people 21 and under are still in crucial stages of development. The use of drugs or alcohol by young people can result in a lifetime of mental illness.

Honolulu Star-Advertiser, 07 Dec 2011 - John Hansen shows a misunderstanding of people in his letter titled "Illegal drugs cause irreparable harm" (Star-Advertiser, Letters, Dec. 5). Some people in society emerge from childhood with a desire to numb their minds of a pain most of us will never understand. These people are prone to develop damaging dependencies on street drugs.
